Planning ahead for Canton’s water needs.

We’re studying long-term options to ensure our community’s future water supply. No final decisions have been made. This site is here to provide facts, answer questions, and invite your input.

A Long-Term Planning Effort, Still in the Early Stages

The City of Canton is exploring long-term strategies to ensure access to water for future generations. One option under review is the creation of a reservoir — but this is part of a 50+ year planning process that began over a decade ago. We are still in the early stages, and no land has been purchased.

We know there are concerns and questions — this page is here to offer transparency, share what we know, and hear from you.

What should you know?

  • We are in the early stages of what may be a 50+ year process

  • No land has been acquired

  • We are committed to buying land fairly, if and when the time comes

  • This planning is about protecting future generations of Van Zandt County residents

Where are we in the Process?

  • Canton’s Comprehensive Plan calls for exploring long-term water options

  • Engineers study multiple alternatives

  • State approves reuse permit

  • Environmental studies and permitting continue

  • If all agencies approve, land acquisition may begin.

Respect. Fairness. Listening.

We understand that water planning affects landowners and families. That’s why our approach is rooted in transparency, fairness, and listening. If land is needed in the future, the City will make every effort to purchase it voluntarily and at fair market value.
